What types of burial are available at Tithe Green?

Accepted Answer

We call these different types of burial ‘approaches’ and there are four we can arrange. They all involve natural materials only, and take place in one of our beautiful natural burial sites, either in a woodland or wildflower meadow setting:

Natural burial (from £1,675)

This means burying a person in a biodegradable coffin using only natural materials, either within woodland (a tree and plaque are planted alongside) or a wildflower meadow (a plaque is placed).

Natural burial of ashes (from £700)

This means burying a person’s ashes in the ground in a biodegradable container. As with our main natural burial approach, this can be within woodland (with a tree and plaque) or a wildflower meadow (plaque).

Cremation + natural burial of ashes (from £2,295)

This means enlisting us to arrange an unattended cremation and burial of ashes in the ground in a biodegradable container. As with all approaches, burial of ashes can be attended or unattended.

Memorial tree without burial (from £600)

This means planting a tree in someone’s memory without a burial taking place. This too can be attended or unattended. All trees are accompanied by a welsh slate plaque with a bespoke inscription.

Question 2

Can ashes be buried at Tithe Green?

Accepted Answer

We can arrange burial of a person’s ashes, placed within a biodegradable container, and this can either be supplied by you or purchased from us (options here). As with our main natural burial approach, this can take place within woodland or a wildflower meadow. All of our burial options can be attended or unattended. Natural burial of ashes starts at £700 (depending on your choices) and we can also arrange an unattended cremation if you need us to.

How are graves marked?

Graves at Tithe Green are marked either with a memorial plaque or a memorial tree and plaque. Instead of a tombstone, we plant a tree as part of every woodland burial, placing a small Welsh slate plaque with an inscription at the foot of the tree. In our wildflower meadow settings we place plaques instead of trees, but we can plant a tree in nearby woodland. We can also plant a memorial tree without a burial taking place.

Question 4

Is it possible to be buried next to a family member or friend?

Accepted Answer

It is possible to arrange plots next to each other within our wildflower meadows, but not in our woodland settings. When booking adjacent plots in our wildflower meadows, the location of the plots is confirmed at the time of the first burial.

Question 5

Are only certain coffins and urns used with natural burial?

Accepted Answer

Natural burial means using only natural materials, so it’s crucial that any coffin or urn we place into the ground is 100% biodegradable. There should be no glues or resins used in the manufacture of these items, and this often leads to designs using willow, wicker, wool, cardboard or plain, untreated pine. We sell wool and wicker urns for natural burial of ashes here. We don’t currently sell coffins, but if you take a look at our ‘advice and support’ page it’s likely you’ll see us highlighting suppliers we can recommend.

Question 6

How long are services allowed to last?

Accepted Answer

We usually schedule one hour for natural burials, or half an hour for natural burial of ashes. If you think you will need longer than this, please let us know in advance so we can ensure there will be no crossover with other services.
